Bath time tips.

Bath time is a great time to connect with your baby. You can bathe your baby at any time of day but an evening soak is perfect to prepare baby for nighttime.

  1. Collect everything you’ll need: baby wash, portable tub, clean outfit, diaper, cotton buds, bath towel, washcloths, sponge, rubber duckie, a small cup for rinsing, and moisturizer or oil. Fragrance-free and natural washes are best for baby’s sensitive skin.

  2. Place tub on a sturdy surface at a good height to avoid an achy back. Place a washcloth or hand towel in the bottom of the tub for comfort and to prevent sliding.

  3. Fill tub about half full and have a washcloth handy to cover baby for warmth. Water temperature should be between 98-100 degrees. Be sure to check the temperature with a water thermometer or your wrist.

  4. Cradle baby and support their head to place them into the bath.

  5. Apply a small amount of baby wash to a cloth or sponge. even gentle cleansers can dry baby’s skin. Start by cleaning baby’s eyes and face. Then wash baby’s hair. Next, gently wash your baby’s body making sure to clean the creases and under their neck.

  6. Bond with your baby by talking, singing, or playing games to help them enjoy bath time.

  7. Lift baby out of bath gently and place them on their back drying with a soft towel making sure to dry creases. Moisturize and massage baby from head to toe before dressing.

Note: If your baby’s umbilical cord is still attached, avoid submerging and pat dry. If you notice drainage, redness, or a foul smell, contact your midwife.

You don’t need to bathe your baby every day—three times a week is usually enough.
