What to consider before inviting someone to your birth.

Deciding who to invite to your birth can be complicated. Apart from a qualified provider, labor support, and your partner or spouse, who else might you want to invite to your birth?

Some people choose to invite parents, close friends, or siblings to share in the experience and provide additional support. It’s always a good idea to give each person specific tasks so they can contribute positively to your birth experience, respect your wishes, and give you the support you need. You might want to consider assigning the following responsibilities:

  • making food and snacks

  • providing childcare for older children

  • keeping things clean and tidy (laundry, clean up, washing dishes, keeping a clean and comfortable environment)

  • taking pictures

Never feel obligated to invite someone who makes you feel anxious or doesn’t support your birth plan or goals.
